General Information: This strain was isolated in Akorabo, Ghana in 1980. Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue causes chronic and disfiguring illness called yaws. The disease starts as a skin infection causing persistent ulcers and progresses to form tumor-like masses. This disease tends to infect children and is common in rural areas in Africa, Southeast Asia and equatorial South America.
