General Information: This strain was isolated in Western Samoa in 1953. Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue causes the chronic and disfiguring illness called yaws. The disease starts as a skin infection causing persistent ulcers and progresses to form tumor-like masses. This disease tends to infect children and is common in rural areas in Africa, Southeast Asia and equatorial South America.
