Host Lineage: Chlamydophila felis; Chlamydophila; Chlamydiaceae; Chlamydiales; Chlamydiae; Bacteria

General Information: Chlamydophila felis strain Fe/C-56 was isolated from a cat with conjunctivitis. Causes conjunctivitis and respiratory disease in cats. Bacteria belonging to the Chlamydiales group are obligate intracellular parasites of eukaryotic cells. They are found within vertebrates, invertebrate cells, and amoebae hosts. Chlamydiae are one of the commonest causes of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and if left untreated may cause infertility in women. They are transmitted by direct contact or aerosols, and can cause various diseases, while also being able to coexist with the host in an apparently asymptomatic state. Some strains of Chlamydophila felis were previously classed under Chlamydia psittaci. Infection in cats leads to inflammation of conjunctiva (the membrane lining the eyelids), rhinitis (inflammation of the nasal mucous membranes) and respiratory problems, endemic in house cats worldwide.
