Query: NC_018000:1207231 Sinorhizobium fredii USDA 257 chromosome, complete genome Lineage: Sinorhizobium fredii; Sinorhizobium; Rhizobiaceae; Rhizobiales; Proteobacteria; Bacteria General Information: This organism, much like other Rhizobia, forms a symbiotic relationship with a leguminous plant, such as soybean, cowpea or pigeon pea. Expression of nodulation genes results in production of a nodulation signal which the plant cell recognizes inducing root nodule formation. The plant cell provides carbon compounds for the bacterium to grow on.

General Information: First isolated from soil in 1941. Bacterium with a multi-stage lifecycle. M.xanthus is a Gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium. This organism undergoes a complex development and differentiation pathway. When cell density increases, the organism switches to "social motility" where aggregates of cells can gather together into masses termed fruiting bodies that may consist of up to 100 000 cells. This organism is also utilized industrially to produce the anticancer drug epithilone.
