Treponema pallidum subsp. pertenue causes chronic and disfiguring illness called yaws. The disease starts as a skin infection causing persistent ulcers and progresses to form tumor-like masses. This disease tends to infect children and is common in rural areas in Africa, Southeast Asia and equatorial South America.

General Information: This organism is extremely salt tolerant and alkaliphilic and has a number of hydrogen, sodium and potassium transporters to deal with these extreme environments. This organism was isolated from deep sea mud (1050 m) from the Iheya ridge near Okinawa, Japan in 1998.
