Gram-negative bacterium isolated from coelomic fluid of a sand dollarfish (Poronotus triacanthus) of the family Stromateidae (butterfish family), a family of fishes with almost circular bodies and small mouths. The dollarfish (genus Peprilus), is found from Maine to South Carolina, USA during the summer.

General Information: Mycoplasma haemofelis, formerly Haemobartonella felis, causes an infectious anemia in cats. Antibiotic treatment can control acute infection, although latent infection persists.
