Query: NC_014215:1929000 Propionibacterium freudenreichii subsp. shermanii CIRM-BIA1, Lineage: Propionibacterium freudenreichii; Propionibacterium; Propionibacteriaceae; Actinomycetales; Actinobacteria; Bacteria General Information: Propionibacterium freudenreichii is a member of the "dairy propionibacteria", commonly isolated from cheese and other dairy products. Propionibacterium freudenreichii subsp. shermanii, formerly Propionibacterium shermanii, is important for the development of flavor and the characteristic holes in Swiss cheese. In addition, Propionibacterium freudenreichii subsp. shermanii has been used as a probiotic for humans and animals and may have a role in preventing of colon cancer.

General Information: It is a nitrogen-fixing symbiotic bacteria that interacts with the root of the common bean plant Phaseolus vulgaris. The molecular biology and evolution of R. etli and its relation to other nitrogen/fixing symbionts has been well studied. The genomic sequence will provide information on the process of symbiosis, on the genetic systems that allow the survival and adaptations of this bacteria to the soil, and on the evolutionary relationship and the symbiosis origin of this organism.
