It is a strictly anaerobic heterotroph capable of using complex organic compounds, ethanol and various organic acids as energy and carbon sources. Elemental sulfur, nitrate or arsenate was required for growth as an electron acceptor.

General Information: Burkholderia cenocepacia MC0-3 was isolated from soil associated with maize roots. This species (genomovar III) is part of the Burkholderia cepacia complex, which consists of 9 closely related species, also known as genomovars. These organisms are commonly found in soil and all are opportunistic pathogens espcially in cystic fibrosis patients.
