Corynebacterium aurimucosum has been isolated from a number of clinical samples including blood and infected bone, however it is not known what role this organism may have in the development of disease. This organism is also isolated from healthy female urogenital tract samples and is considered part of the normal microbial community.

Strain DSM 20547, the type strain, is a free-living, nonmotile, Gram-positive bacterium, originally isolated from a marine environment in about 1944. It grows as spherical/coccoid and occurs predominantly in tetrads which can be arranged in cubical packets. It is non-encapsulated and does not form endospores, is strictly aerobic and chemoorganotrophic, requires methionine and other amino acids for growth, and grows well in NaCl at concentrations up to 10% (w/v). This organism is a normal commensal of human skin, however has been implicated in pitted keratolysis, pneumonia, and other opportunistic infections.
