The isolation strategy used targeted slowly growing polyphosphate-accumulating bacteria by combining low-speed centrifugations and prolonged incubation on a low-nutrient medium. This is the first isolated species in the Gemmatimonadetes phylum.

The species epithet is derived from slithy, a nonsense word from Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky for a fictional organism that is 'slithy' and the Latin word 'suffix' meaning '-like, in the shape of', yielding the Neo-Latin word 'slithyformis' meaning 'slithy in form'.
