This organism can be divided into three strains, pepper race 1 which causes disease in all peppers, pepper race 2 which causes a limited disease in peppers that have a specific resistance gene, and a tomato strain which causes a limited disease in all peppers, Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria strain 85-10 is a pepper race 2 strain.
