General Information: Thermoanaerobacter ethanolicus was isolated from a hot spring microbial mat in Yellowstone National Park. It is a thermophilic anaerobic bacterium, which ferments a wide range of hexose and pentose sugars, as well as starch and pullulan, to ethanol.

This organism is a member of the highly diverse bacterial phylum Bacteroidetes which includes the endosymbiont lineages represented by the sister taxa Candidatus A. asiaticus and Candidatus Cardinium hertigii, a symbiont of arthropods.
