General Information: Isolated from a blood sample of human bacteremia in South Africa. Causes food poisoning. This organism is the leading cause of bacterial food poisoning (campylobacteriosis) in the world, and is more prevalent than Salmonella enteritis (salmonellosis). Found throughout nature, it can colonize the intestines of both mammals and birds, and transmission to humans occurs via contaminated food products. Lineage: Capnocytophaga canimorsus; Capnocytophaga; Flavobacteriaceae; Flavobacteriales; Bacteroidetes; Bacteria

General Information: Capnocytophaga canimorsus is a commensal Gram-negative bacterium from the canine oral cavity that may cause severe zoonosis after dog bites. Capnocytophaga canimorsus is able to escape and modulate innate immunity at several levels and has the unusual property to feed on cultured mammalian cells, including phagocytes.
