General Information: A methane-producing motile coccus. This type species of Methanococcus was isolated from a San Francisco Bay, USA mud flat. Unlike other members of the genus this species grows only between 20 degrees C - 40 degrees C.

General Information: Methanosarcina barkeri strain Fusaro was isolated from mud samples taken from the freshwater lake, Lago del Fusaro near Naples, Italy. This organism is a strictly anaerobic, non-motile, methane-producing archaeon and has been found in marine mud, rumens of ungulates, lagoons polluted with animal waste and sludge from anaerobic sewage digestors.
