Query: NC_009616:979861 Thermosipho melanesiensis BI429 chromosome, complete genome
Lineage: Thermosipho melanesiensis; Thermosipho; Thermotogaceae; Thermotogales; Thermotogae; Bacteria
General Information: BI429 (CIP 104789) is the type strain for this species and was isolated from the gills of Bathymodiolus brevior, a deep-sea mussel. The sample was taken from the Lau Basin at the bottom of a black smoker between 1832 and 1887 metres. Thermosipho melanesiensis is a deep-sea thermophilic marine organism closely related to a hot springs isolate, T. africanus.
Subject: NC_009840:1485383 Prochlorococcus marinus str. MIT 9215, complete genome
Lineage: Prochlorococcus marinus; Prochlorococcus; Prochlorococcaceae; Prochlorales; Cyanobacteria; Bacteria
General Information: Marine cyanobacterium. It is found in low- to mid-latitude oceans and seas, thriving in nutrient-poor water. This non-motile bacterium is a free-living marine organism that is one of the most abundant, as well as the smallest, on earth, and contributes heavily to carbon cycling in the marine environment. This cyanobacterium grows in areas of nitrogen and phosphorus limitation and is unique in that it utilizes divinyl chlorophyll a/b proteins as light-harvesting systems instead of phycobiliproteins. These pigments allow harvesting of light energy from blue wavelengths at low light intensity.
