This organism was isolated from heavy metal-contaminated marine sediment collected at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard on the San Francisco Bay, USA.

It is ubiquitous in the environment and is a food and waterborne pathogen that affects animals as well as humans by causing gastroenteritis like Yersinia enterocolitica.
