General Information: This strain was isolated from human dental plaque in 1980 and is virulent in a rat model. Indigenous oral bacteria that causes dental decay and possibly endocarditis. Most streptococci are facultative anaerobes, and some are obligate anaerobes. Serologic grouping is based on antigenic differences in cell wall carbohydrates, in cell wall pili-associated protein, and in the polysaccharide capsule in group B streptococci. Progression of caries and periodontal disease are associated with this microbe as is endocarditis which can lead to death.
