Causes an infectious mononucleosis-like disease. Like other Ehrlichia, this organism is an obligate intracellular pathogen. It can be transmitted from fish flukes (trematodes) to humans, and was one of the first Ehrlichia that was found to cause a human-specific illness.

This organism is a thermophilic bacterium which can grow at temperatures of up to 77 degrees C and at salt concentrations of over 6% NaCl. It has been isolated from shallow water geothermal habitats in Iceland, Portugal and Italy.
