Extreme thermoacidophilic sulfur-oxidizing archaeon. This organsim is an extreme thermoacidophilic, sulfur-oxidizing archaeon commonly found in hot springs growing at very high temperatures. This obligate aerobe is immotile and grows at a temperature of 55-85 degrees C with optimal growth at 70-75 degrees C. The pH for growth is 1-6 with an optimum pH 2-3.

General Information: Thermophilic methanogenic archaeon. This organism has been found at Guaymas hot vents at a depth of 2000, at a depth of 1006 m on the Kolbeinsey Ridge north of Iceland and on hydrothermically heated black smoker walls at a depth of 3650 m at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This methanogen grows chemolithoautotrophically at 80-110ºC in a hydrogen-carbon dioxide atmosphere.
