Although the organism has not been observed to be motile or to sporulate, it does contain genes for both functions. The bacterium produces acetate and ethanol from glucose and cannot degrade xylan and cellulose.

Lactobacillus amylovorus is a common member of the normal gastrointestinal tract microbiota in pigs, and specific strains have been suggested as potential probiotics. In addition, Lactobacillus amylovorus has also been isolated from plant material.
