Query: NC_000913:3624826 Escherichia coli K12, complete genome

Lineage: Escherichia coli; Escherichia; Enterobacteriaceae; Enterobacteriales; Proteobacteria; Bacteria

General Information: This organism was named for its discoverer, Theodore Escherich, and is one of the premier model organisms used in the study of bacterial genetics, physiology, and biochemistry. This enteric organism is typically present in the lower intestine of humans, where it is the dominant facultative anaerobe present, but it is only one minor constituent of the complete intestinal microflora. E. coli, is capable of causing various diseases in its host, especially when they acquire virulence traits. E. coli can cause urinary tract infections, neonatal meningitis, and many different intestinal diseases, usually by attaching to the host cell and introducing toxins that disrupt normal cellular processes.

Subject: NC_007086:1032107 Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris str. 8004, complete genome

Lineage: Xanthomonas campestris; Xanthomonas; Xanthomonadaceae; Xanthomonadales; Proteobacteria; Bacteria

General Information: The original was isolated from an inflected cauliflower in Sussex, United Kingdom, in 1958. Strain 8004 is a spontaneous rifampicin resistant strain. Causes black rot disease in crucifers. These organisms are almost exclusively found associated with their plant hosts and are not found free in the soil. This species is a major cause of black rot in crucifers, a disease that results in massive tissue degeneration. It also produces an extracellular polysaccharide known as xanthan, which is harvested commercially as a food stabilizing agent for use in industry.
