General Information: Thermophilic sulphur-reducing bacterium. Isolated from a deep-sea hydrothermal vent chimney at the Suiyo Seamount in the Izu-Bonin Arc, Japan. Deferribacter desulfuricans is an anaerobic, heterotrophic thermophile. It is a strictly anaerobic heterotroph capable of using complex organic compounds, ethanol and various organic acids as energy and carbon sources. Elemental sulfur, nitrate or arsenate was required for growth as an electron acceptor.

Industrial production requires the use of starter cultures, which are carefully created, cultivated, and maintained, which produce specific end products during fermentation that impart flavor to the final product, as well as contributing important metabolic reactions, such as the breakdown of milk proteins during cheese production. The end product of fermentation, lactic acid, is also being used as a starter molecule for complex organic molecule syntheses. Lactobacillus crispatus is a member of the normal human oral, gastrointestinal, and genital tract microflora.
