General Information: Isolated from a single patient with pseudomembranous colitis in a Paris hospital in 1985. Clostridium difficile, a Gram-positive, spore-forming anaerobic bacterium, is the leading cause of infectious diarrhea among patients in hospitals worldwide, causing C. difficile infection (CDI). An important nosocomial pathogen, it is frequently associated with antibiotic treatment and causes diseases ranging from antibiotic-associated diarrhea to life-threatening pseudomembraneous colitis.

General Information: Fervidobacterium nodosum is a thermophilic, Gram-negative, motile, non-sporulating, glycolytic, obligately anaerobic rod that exists singly, in pairs or in chains. Fervidobacterium nodosum was isolated from a hot spring in New Zealand. Its optimal growth temperature is 65 to 70 degrees Celsius. The cellular morphology of this organism, a member of the Thermotogales, is characterized by a terminal spherical extension of the cell envelope.
