Ticks from the east side are primarily infected with R. peacockii which is nonvirulent and may prevent the establishment of pathogenic Rickettsia species in these ticks.

This organism is a member of a group of anaerobic halophilic bacteria related to the Clostridia. This organism is a thermophile and therefore is able to grow in hot anaerobic saline environments.
