This is the first isolated species in the Gemmatimonadetes phylum.

Propionibacterium freudenreichii subsp. shermanii, formerly Propionibacterium shermanii, is important for the development of flavor and the characteristic holes in Swiss cheese. In addition, Propionibacterium freudenreichii subsp. shermanii has been used as a probiotic for humans and animals and may have a role in preventing of colon cancer.
