Query: NC_012470:1061392 Streptococcus equi subsp. zooepidemicus, complete genome Lineage: Streptococcus equi; Streptococcus; Streptococcaceae; Lactobacillales; Firmicutes; Bacteria General Information: This bacterium is part of the normal bacterial flora in horses, however, it has also been isolated from a number of other mammals including humans. S. equi subsp. zooepidemicus is the cause of Inflammatory Airway Disease (IAD) in horses. This organism is also an opportunistic pathogen which can cause infections in the upper respiratory tract, uterus, umbilicus and in open wounds. Pathogenic in horses, goats and sheep. Streptococci are Gram-positive, nonmotile, nonsporeforming, catalase-negative cocci that occur in pairs or chains. Members of this genus vary widely in pathogenic potential. Most streptococci are facultative anaerobes, and some are obligate anaerobes.

General Information: This strain is a serotype M18 strain often associated with acute rheumatic fever outbreaks in the USA. Causes tonsilitis. Most streptococci are facultative anaerobes, and some are obligate anaerobes. Serologic grouping is based on antigenic differences in cell wall carbohydrates, in cell wall pili-associated protein, and in the polysaccharide capsule in group B streptococci. This organism is a member of the normal human nasopharyngeal flora. S. pyogenes is a group A streptococcus and is the leading cause of uncomplicated bacterial pharyngitis and tonsillitis. This organism is commonly referred to by the lay press as "flesh eating bacteria".
