This species is a member of the Burkholderia cepacia complex, although it does not appear to spread from patient to patient as do the other members of the group.

These strains form orange/red colonies, spherical-shaped cells, have an optimum growth temperature of about 50 degrees C, an optimum pH for growth between about 7.5 and 9.5, and do not grow at pH below 6.5 or above pH 11.2.
