Query: NC_009975:1034144 Methanococcus maripaludis C6, complete genome

Lineage: Methanococcus maripaludis; Methanococcus; Methanococcaceae; Methanococcales; Euryarchaeota; Archaea

General Information: This strain was isolated from intertidal sediments. Methanococcus maripaludis is a rapid growing hydrogenotrophic methanoarchaeon common in salt marshes, marine and estuarine environments in the Southeastern U.S.A. Methanococcus maripaludis is an obligately anaerobic, mesophilic, methane-producing archaeon. Growth on hydrogen and carbon dioxide results in the production of methane as a waste product. M. maripaludis stands out among methanogenic archaea as an ideal model species because of fast reproducible growth and effective genetic tools.

Subject: NC_009515:967600 Methanobrevibacter smithii ATCC 35061, complete genome

Lineage: Methanobrevibacter smithii; Methanobrevibacter; Methanobacteriaceae; Methanobacteriales; Euryarchaeota; Archaea

General Information: Methanobrevibacter smithii ATCC 35061 (DSM 861) (strain PS) was isolated from a sewage digester in Gainesville, Florida, USA. Sewage digester isolate. Human gut methanogen. Methanobrevibacter smithii can be isolated from anoxic environments such as anaerobic digesters, anaerobic soil and sediment, and the gastrointestinal tracts of humans, ruminants and other animals. This organism is the dominant archaeal symbiont found in the human gut.
