General Information: An aerobic, non-motile, Gram-negative, short rod. It is motile when growing with acetate, octane or in complex medium. It is able to metabolize a wide range of anionic and non-ionic surfactants and utilizes all representatives of the two major classes of surfactants used in laundry products in Germany, anionics and non-ionics. The epithet "lavamentivorans" stands for "consuming (chemicals) used for washing". Parvibaculum lavamentivorns is able to degrade linear alkylbenzenesulfonate and other surfactants making this organism useful in industrial and bioremediation applications. Strain DS-1 was enriched from a sewage treatment plant.

General Information: Isolated from freshwater sulfide-rich mud of a waterway near Kameno river, Wakayama, in Japan. This organism is a sulfate-reducing delta proteobacterium which synthesizes intracellular magnetite particles. Desulfovibrio magneticus produces irregular, membrane-bound magnetite particles, unlike other magnetite-producing bacteria which contain crystalline magnetite in the cytoplasm. Desulfovibrio magneticus does not migrate along a magnetic field but swims randomly.
