It can occupy different ecological niches, and its metabolic versatility probably enables it to adapt to the geochemical variability in deep-sea hydrothermal environments.

This organism, a member of the Thermotogales, has the characteristic morphology of one or more cells contained in a sheath-like envelope which extends beyond the cell wall. Petroleum reservoirs are a unique subsurface environment characterized by high temperatures, moderate to high salt concentrations, and abundant organic matter.
