These organism are common in soil and freshwater. Mycobacterium gilvum PYR-GCK was isolated from river sediment, Grand Calumet River in Northwestern Indiana, USA.

In addition, Propionibacterium freudenreichii subsp. shermanii has been used as a probiotic for humans and animals and may have a role in preventing of colon cancer.
