Desulfotomaculum reducens is able to reduce uranium and chromium making it a potential agent for the bioremediation of heavy metals. This organism was isolated from heavy metal-contaminated marine sediment collected at the Mare Island Naval Shipyard on the San Francisco Bay, USA.
