This microbe, along with some others collected at this site, is able to rapidly mineralize 14C-labeled pyrene. Phylogenetic studies based on the rRNA 16S gene confirmed that strains collected at this site were distinct from one another and also from other known Mycobacterium isolates.

General Information: This organism is a thermotolerant cellulolytic actinomycete that was originally isolated from an acidic hot spring in Yellowstone National Park. A number of thermostable endoglucanases are produced by this organism, which are useful for degrading cellulose in the production of ethanol as a biofuel.
