Syntrophus aciditrophicus is able to ferment benzoate when grown in co-culture with hydrogen-consuming methanogens (syntrophic metabolism).

This organism was originally classified as Thermobacteroides proteolyticus and subsequently assigned to the new genus of Coprothermobacter.
