Unlike other Mollicutes, this species does not require sterol to be supplied in the media for growth.

Desulfatibacillum alkenivorans is an alkene-degrading, sulfate-reducing bacterium isolated from estuarine sediment. It activates alkanes via subterminal addition of the alkane to fumarate.
