General Information: Acidophilic archaeon. This organism is an obligate aerobic, hyperthermophilic, acidophilic, sulfur-metabolizing archaeon. This organism was isolated from Beppu Hot Springs in the geothermal area of Kyushu Island, Japan. Growth occurs optimally at 80°C and pH 2.5-3.

Propionate-oxidizing bacterium. This organism is able to oxidize propionate when grown in co-culture with hydrogen-consuming methanogens (syntrophic metabolism). This organism can also ferment fumarate when not in co-culture.
