This species is an extremely thermophilic anaerobic bacteria, isolated from Obsidian Pool, Yellowstone National Park. It is a novel cellulolytic bacteria. Caldicellulosiruptor is a genus of thermophilic gram positive bacteria. These organisms produce a number of thermostable enzymes which may have industrial uses.
