The genome shows that these cells have the ability to store the products of both photosynthesis (glycogen) and nitrogen fixation (cyanophycin) as intracellular inclusion bodies. Unlike some other Cyanothece strains, Cyanothece 7424 appears to be an obligate autotroph.
